A house well system has parts down the hole and parts up top. Down the well sits the submersible pump, hung on drop pipe with the pump wire strapped alongside it. The pump pushes water up the pipe instead of pulling it from the surface.
At the wellhead, a pitless adapter carries the water sideways out of the casing below the frost line. It seals the top of the well and keeps that connection from freezing, so no well pit is needed. South Carolina's well standards call for casing that stands at least a foot above the ground, capped at the top.
Inside the house or the well house, the pressure tank and switch hold steady water pressure. The switch has a cut-in pressure that starts the pump and a cut-out pressure that stops it. Jet pumps sit above the well and pull water up with suction. A shallow well jet pump works where the water stands less than 25 feet down. A submersible pump sits under the water in the well and pushes the water up the pipe.
Drilled wells in the Upstate go through soil and weathered rock into hard Piedmont bedrock. Two Spartanburg County wells logged by the state are 6 inches across and 225 and 442 feet deep. A well that size takes a submersible pump. It moves more water than a jet pump on the same size motor.
Jet pumps still have a place on a shallow well or a narrow well. The tradeoff with a submersible is service, because it has to come out of the well to be worked on. So the drop pipe, the wire and the fittings down the hole matter as much as the pump.
Pump size starts with the numbers from the well. How deep the water sits and what the well makes in gallons per minute both matter. Then we look at the house. A household with seven people needs more gallons per minute than a household with two.
In the Upstate, yield comes from the fractures the well hits, so it changes from lot to lot. A study of more than a thousand Upstate wells put the middle yield near 8 gallons per minute. Those wells sit in Spartanburg, Greenville and northern Pickens counties. We size the pump to what your well makes.
