Boiling Springs grew up fast along SC-9, and the water mains followed the new rooftops. Off those mains, on the roads running north toward Lake Bowen, homes run on private wells. A new house on a single lot out there starts with no water until a well is drilled. An older place out there can have a shallow well that quits in a dry September.

Public water on the SC-9 corridor comes from Spartanburg Water. Its retail service area runs about 259 square miles, inside a total footprint of roughly 864 square miles. Inman Campobello Water District covers ground to the north. Neither one puts a main down every county road.
Spartanburg Water tells new customers that tap cost depends on meter size and where the main line sits. On a lot a long way from a main, that is a real number to look at. A well on the property takes the utility out of the picture. The well belongs to the owner and stays with the property.
The built up middle of Boiling Springs sits close to the mains. Hanging Rock, Ravenwood, Valley Falls and Southern Shops are in that part of town. Go a few miles out Parris Bridge Road, or toward Woodfin Ridge and Lake Bowen, and lots get bigger. Further from a main, a private well is usually the practical answer.
The community is named for a spring that once pushed water into the air. A small park marks the spot at McMillian Boulevard and Highway 9. Groundwater under the rest of the county is less obliging.
This is the Piedmont. Under the red clay is saprolite, which is bedrock weathered down into soil. Under that is hard crystalline rock, and water moves through the fractures in it. Fractures sit at different depths on every lot, so the ground sets the depth.
State observation records for Spartanburg County show the spread. One well at Croft State Park runs 225 feet deep, another in Spartanburg runs 442 feet. Our own job in Inman, just up the road, hit hard rock and found good water past 520 feet. That is why the written estimate quotes a minimum depth.
South Carolina covers private wells under a state general permit. The driller carries the responsibility for getting that coverage before the hole is started. We file the notice of intent with the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services. The homeowner is not chasing that form.
Septic runs on a separate track through the same state agency rather than the county. The two matter to each other on a small lot. The state well standards set 75 feet between a well and a septic tank or drainfield. We check the setbacks on the site survey before anything gets staked.
After the well is finished, the driller files a water well record with the state. It carries the total depth and the casing depth. You end up with a filed record of what is in the ground on your property.
Boiling Springs keeps adding houses. The census count went from 8,219 people in 2010 to 10,405 in 2020. Builders are still working the SC-9 corridor and the roads feeding it. SC-9 runs from Pacolet through Spartanburg and up here, so the rig comes over on one road.
Some of those lots never had a water main near them. That growth produces two kinds of calls. A builder needs a well on a lot the utility never reached. Or an older place has a well that stopped keeping up with the house.
Some of those turn out to be a pump or a tank. A pump that runs and never builds pressure points to well pump repair. A pump that snaps on and off every few seconds usually points to the pressure tank. When the well itself is finished, drilling a new well is the answer.
