Water Wells, Pumps and Water Lines for Landrum Property Owners

For well drilling in Landrum, SC, the first question is whether a water line reaches your lot. Spartanburg Water's Landrum system covers about 15 square miles. The 29356 ZIP code takes in about 82 square miles of land. Past the lines, a new house needs its own well, and an older well can run dry.

Based in Pacolet, just outside Spartanburg, Core Well Drilling is licensed and bonded. Our drillers bring more than 40 years of drilling experience. Around Landrum, our main work is drilling new wells and replacing wells that ran dry or failed. We also install the well pump system and run the water line to the house. Call (864) 768-5688 and we will get back to you.

Landrum water and the land past its lines

Spartanburg Water runs Landrum's water as a separate service area, set apart from the rest of its system. It covers about 15 square miles in northwestern Spartanburg County and reaches into Greenville County. The system serves about 4,400 people through a distribution system of nearly 30 miles.

That is more people than live in the city itself, so the lines reach past the city limits. The Landrum system uses surface water from Hogback Creek, near the top of Hogback Mountain. It also draws from Vaughn's Creek, with that source water in Greenville County.

Most of the land in the 29356 ZIP code lies outside that 15-square-mile system. Before you buy land around Landrum, ask the water utility whether a line reaches the lot. If none does, the house will need a well, and our site survey helps pick its spot. Where both are possible, our guide to well water vs city water compares them.

How deep are wells around Landrum?

The ground around Landrum belongs to what the USGS calls the Piedmont and Blue Ridge aquifers. There, bedrock sits under a blanket of loose, weathered material called regolith. Most of that blanket is saprolite, an earthy, decomposed rock, and in places it runs 150 feet thick.

A rock well gets its water from fractures in the bedrock. The USGS notes that a well crossing no fractures yields little or no water. So the depth and the yield change from one lot to the next.

On one hard-rock well we drilled in Inman, good water showed a little past 520 feet. Sometimes an Upstate well finds water near 200 feet. The state requires the casing to reach bedrock, and the rock only shows itself once the drill reaches it. That is why our written estimate for drilling a new well quotes a minimum depth and explains the casing cost.

A railroad town on US-176 and the communities around it

Landrum was founded in 1880, after the railroad was extended north from Spartanburg. The town is named for John Gill Landrum, who gave the land for the local depot. Today the city centers on the crossing of US-176 and SC-14, just west of I-26. It sits about 1,024 feet above sea level.

The 2020 Census counted 2,481 people in the city. About 8,893 people live in the 29356 ZIP code, the only ZIP code for Landrum. So most people with a Landrum address live outside the city limits.

Campobello, a town of 675 people in the 2020 Census, also sits on US-176. SC-11 passes through its northern part and connects it with I-26 to the east. Across the county line, Gowensville sits along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway and SC-14 in Greenville County. Gowensville is home to Campbell's Covered Bridge, the last covered bridge in South Carolina.

Well permits near Landrum and the drive from Pacolet

The permit for a new home well comes from the state. SCDES, the state environmental agency, requires it under Regulation 61-44, and the state's fee is $70 for each home well. The driller notifies SCDES 48 hours before installation. Within thirty days of finishing the well, the driller files a well record with the state.

The house needs its own building permit. Spartanburg County's Building Codes Department handles residential construction permitting from its office in Spartanburg. If the lot sits inside the Landrum city limits, check with the city too. Our guide to the South Carolina well permit covers the steps.

The rig comes over from our shop in Pacolet on US-176, the same highway that runs through downtown Landrum. Landrum is about 30 miles from the shop in a straight line, and about 21 miles from Spartanburg. US-176 also passes Inman, where we work too.

Landrum FAQ

Questions From Landrum Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Landrum. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (864) 768-5688

Do you drill wells around Landrum, Campobello and Gowensville?
Yes. We are based in Pacolet and work the Upstate about 60 miles around Spartanburg. Campobello is in Spartanburg County, and Gowensville sits just over the line in Greenville County. We work in both counties, so call (864) 768-5688 and we will get back to you.
What drives the cost of a new well in Landrum?
Depth is the biggest piece, and the rock under your lot sets it. The casing has to reach bedrock, and the weathered layer above the rock is deeper on some lots. The pump system and the length of the water line to the house add their own costs. The site survey comes first, and then a free written estimate quotes a minimum depth.
My well near Landrum went dry. What should I do?
SCDES tells owners of a dry home well to call a well driller. First rule out the pump, because a failed pump or pressure switch can leave the taps dry. Our no-water checklist covers those checks, and well pump repair handles a worn pump. If the well itself has given out, we drill replacement wells as state-certified well drillers.
How long does it take to drill a well near Landrum?
Many wells are drilled in a day or two, and the site survey sets the schedule. The truck-mounted drill rig comes over with a 2,000-gallon water tank truck and a pipe trailer. Once the well is done, the pump and the pressure tank go in. Then the water line runs to the house.
Can you drill a farm or pond well around Landrum?
Yes. We size irrigation and farm wells in gallons per minute, for livestock or an irrigation system. One farm well we drilled elsewhere made more than 20 gallons per minute for a pond. Yield comes from the fractures the drill crosses, so it changes from one lot to the next.
