Greer CPW runs about 400 miles of water line, and those lines stop somewhere. Past them, out toward Lake Cunningham, O'Neal and Blue Ridge, houses run on private wells. For the week ending September 14, 2026, the US Drought Monitor had all of Greenville County abnormally dry. That is the season a shallow well starts pulling air.

Greer CPW delivers water to about 24,500 customers. It runs roughly 400 miles of water line and six storage tanks. The treatment plant sits beside Lake Cunningham, and the lakes that feed it draw from the South Tyger River. Inside that system a house turns on the tap and pays a bill.
The utility publishes where its system ends. On the north it follows Highway 14 to the water treatment plant, then Highway 101 to North Rutherford Road. On the south it runs Highway 101 to Robinson Road and below I-85 to Abner Creek. On the east it reaches the Enoree River on Highway 29.
Past those edges the water comes out of the ground. That is the land toward Blue Ridge, O'Neal, Gowensville and Tigerville in northern Greenville County. On the Spartanburg side it is the acreage out Brockman McClimon Road and Abner Creek Road. We drill there, set the pump and run the water line from the wellhead to the house.
Greer sits on the Piedmont. Under the red clay is saprolite, rock that has weathered in place, and below that is hard rock. A well here works by hitting fractures in that rock. Where the fractures sit is what sets the depth.
A 2018 study looked at 1,069 wells across the Piedmont of northwestern South Carolina, including Greenville and Spartanburg counties. Yields ran from 0 to 200 gallons per minute, with a median of 8. Depth runs just as wide, from 80 feet in one Greenville County record to 442 feet in Spartanburg. Our own hard rock job over in Inman found good water at a little over 520 feet.
Ground shape matters too. The USGS reports thin soil over rock on ridges and hilltops, and the thickest layer under broad draws. The high ground north of Greer toward Blue Ridge reads differently from the flats along the South Tyger. That is why we run a site survey before we schedule, and why the written estimate quotes a minimum depth.
Greer straddles two counties. Downtown and most of the city sit in Greenville County. The airport and the BMW plant sit in Spartanburg County. A lot on Hammett Bridge Road and a lot on Brockman McClimon Road answer to different counties.
The well permit is the same on both sides. The state runs it through the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services. The driller files a Notice of Intent before any drilling starts, and the state has 48 hours to review it. When the well is finished, the driller files the water well record with the state within thirty days.
Septic runs through the same state agency on either side of the line. What follows the county line is the building and zoning side of a new house. The state well standards set the siting rules, including 75 feet from a septic tank or drainfield. Property lines and buildings carry a 5 foot minimum, and we check the rest on the site survey.
Greer has grown fast. The city counted 25,515 people in 2010 and 35,308 in 2020, a rise of about 38 percent. That made it the 14th most populous city in South Carolina. The airport and the BMW plant sit on the Spartanburg side of town.
Growth shows up two ways in our work. Inside the CPW lines, subdivisions go in on city water. Outside them, builders put up houses on acreage and each one needs a well. A farm on that same land may want an irrigation well sized for the sprinklers or livestock.
