Water Wells, Pumps and Water Lines for Union Property Owners

The City of Union runs water lines inside town, and a few small districts reach out along the main roads. Past those lines, a place in Union County gets its water from a well. That is most of the county, out past Cross Keys, Santuc and Goshen Hill. When an old well starts pulling air in a dry September, there is no city main nearby.

Core Well Drilling is based in Pacolet, about 17 road miles northwest of Union. We are licensed and bonded, and our drillers bring more than 40 years of drilling experience. Here we drill new water wells, replacement wells, and wells for houses going up on rural land. We also set the pump system, the pressure tank and the water line to the house. Call (864) 768-5688 and we will get back to you.

Where does public water stop in Union County?

Public water in Union County comes from a short list of systems. The City of Union runs the largest one. The towns of Jonesville, Lockhart and Carlisle each run their own. Outside those, rural districts named Meansville Riley, Browns Creek, Rocky Creek and Santuc Hebron carry the rest.

Every one of those systems draws on surface water. None of them pumps from a well. Union County's public water comes off the rivers, and the pipe follows the towns and the bigger roads. Land off a county road between Cross Keys and Goshen Hill sits outside all of it.

So a house, a barn or a camp out there has one way to get water. You drill for it. That is why so much of Union County has stayed well country.

Who handles the well permit and the septic permit in Union County?

Wells are state business in South Carolina, not county business. A Notice of Intent goes to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services before drilling starts. The regulation puts responsibility for that permit coverage on the well driller. State rules also say every well in South Carolina has to be drilled by a certified well driller.

Septic runs through the same state agency, by way of its local environmental affairs office. Union County is covered by the Greenville Spartanburg office, the same one that covers Spartanburg and Cherokee counties. Building permits are the county's job, and those go through Union County at the courthouse on West Main Street.

When the well is finished, the driller files a water well record with the state. It lists the total depth, the casing depth and what the well produced. You end up with a state record of your own well.

How deep are wells around Union?

Union County sits on the Piedmont, the same ground as the rest of the Upstate. Red clay and weathered rock lie over hard crystalline bedrock. Water moves through cracks in that rock rather than through an underground pool. Two lots a quarter mile apart can hit water at very different depths.

The state's published water level records do not include a well inside Union County. The nearest ones give the range. A Piedmont rock well logged in Laurens County runs 194 feet, and one in Chester County runs 98 feet. Two in Spartanburg County run 225 feet and 442 feet.

One of our jobs up in Inman hit hard rock and found good water at a little over 520 feet. That is why the written estimate quotes a minimum depth. The state standard has us set casing to bedrock. Nobody can see where bedrock starts before the bit gets there.

Well work on farms, timber tracts and hunting land

A lot of Union County land is held for timber and hunting. Sumter National Forest tracts run through the south of the county, inside the Enoree Ranger District. A cabin, a barn or a hunting camp out there needs its own water the same as a house does.

We drill wells sized for irrigation and livestock, and for filling a pond or a pool. A farm well is sized by gallons per minute rather than by the size of the household. The site survey is where we work that out with you, before anything gets scheduled.

Union is a short run for us. The rig comes down SC-9 out of Pacolet, through Jonesville, then south on SC-18 into town. That is about 17 miles and close to 25 minutes. Union sits where US-176, SC-49 and SC-215 meet, so the rest of the county is easy to reach. Many wells are drilled in a day or two. Our Google reviews mention water at the house within two days.

Union FAQ

Questions From Union Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Union. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (864) 768-5688

Do you drill wells outside the Union city limits?
Yes. Most of our Union County work sits outside the lines, out toward Cross Keys, Santuc, Kelton, Adamsburg and West Springs. The rig comes over from Pacolet on SC-9 and SC-18, about 17 miles. Call (864) 768-5688 and we will set up a site survey.
What does a well cost in Union County?
Depth is the biggest piece, and depth is set by where the bedrock and the water bearing fractures sit. Casing has to be set to bedrock, so that run changes the number too. The pump system and the water line to the house add to it. We look at the site and put a free estimate in writing with a minimum depth on it.
My well went dry. Can you replace it in Union County?
Often it can be replaced. State guidance for a dry residential well says to call a well driller. The options are lowering the pump, deepening the well, or drilling a new one. About half of Union County was in moderate drought in the map week of September 8, 2026. We look at your existing well first, then talk about a new well on the same property.
Can Union County stop me from putting a well on my land?
A 2026 state law narrowed what local government can do here. Act 158 stops a city or county from banning a private well. It applies to residential or agricultural property of half an acre or more. A property already on a water system still has to stay connected and register the well. Check your own situation with the county before you plan around it.
Do you work on a well you did not drill?
Yes. Plenty of Union County wells were put in decades ago. The pump and tank on them are usually far newer than the hole. No water, dropping pressure or a pump that never shuts off is well pump repair work. We check power, the pressure switch and the tank before anyone pulls a pump.
