Well drilling in York, SC starts with one question: does a public water main reach your lot? The City of York has its own water and sewer utilities. The city covers about 7.9 square miles, but the 29745 ZIP code reaches past it. Most people with a York address live outside the city limits. Where no main reaches a lot, a new house needs its own well. An older well can also run dry and need replacing.
Core Well Drilling is based in Pacolet, just outside Spartanburg, and we are licensed and bonded. Our drillers bring more than 40 years of drilling experience. Around York, our main work is drilling new water wells and replacing wells that ran dry or failed. We also install the well pump system, the pressure tank and the water line to the house. Call (864) 768-5688 and we will get back to you.

The city's utilities cover water, sewer and trash. Its utility billing office serves about 5,000 customers each month. The city's rate schedule lists rates for customers inside the city limits. It also lists rates for customers outside the city limits.
So the city limits are not a clean line for city water. Before you buy land around York, ask the city, or the county, whether a public main reaches the lot. If none does, the house will need its own well, and our site survey helps pick its spot.
The 2020 Census counted 8,503 people in the City of York. About 32,602 people live in the 29745 ZIP code, the only ZIP code for York. Out in the county, a lot with a York address may have no public main at all.
York is the county seat, and it sits near the geographic center of York County. The present York County Courthouse was completed in 1914. Downtown York is a National Register historic district of 340 acres, one of the largest in the state.
The western York County towns around York are small. In the 2020 Census, Sharon counted 462 people, Hickory Grove 449, McConnells 280 and Smyrna 55. Rural communities such as Filbert, Bethany, Bullock Creek and Tirzah sit in the county too.
Private wells are common across York County. In the state's two newest private well reports, York County ranked third in South Carolina for well approvals. It had 420 in one budget year and 424 in the next. Both counts come from older budget years, 2018 to 2020, not this year.
York County is Piedmont country. The USGS describes the aquifer here as bedrock under a layer of loose, weathered material called regolith. Most of that layer is saprolite, and in places it runs 150 feet thick.
The water in a rock well comes from fractures in the bedrock. The USGS notes that a well that crosses no fractures yields little or no water. That is why the depth can change from one York lot to the next.
The state requires the casing to reach bedrock, and the surface gives no sign of where the rock begins. So our written estimate quotes a minimum depth. It also spells out why the casing cost can vary. The site survey comes first, to help pick the best location for the well.
A new home well in South Carolina is permitted by the state. SCDES, the state environmental agency, requires that permit under Regulation 61-44. State rules make the well driller responsible for the permit coverage, and the driller can file the Notice of Intent. The driller also notifies SCDES 48 hours before installation. Within thirty days of finishing the well, the driller files a well record with the state.
York County Planning and Development Services works from 18 W. Liberty Street in York, the county seat. In the unincorporated parts of the county, it issues building and land disturbance permits. That office covers the house permit, and the well permit stays with the state.
The rig comes over from our shop in Pacolet. York is about 30 miles east of the shop in a straight line. SC-5 connects Rock Hill, York and Blacksburg. At York, it joins SC-161 and loops around the northeast side of the city. Rock Hill sits about 13 miles east of York, and we work there too.

No water at the house, pressure that keeps dropping, or a pump that never shuts off. We check the system in order and repair or replace the part that failed.

Core Well Drilling installs the complete pump system on new and existing wells. That covers the submersible pump, the pitless adapter, the pressure tank and switch, and the hookup at the house.

A well pressure tank holds water under pressure so the pump does not run every time a faucet opens. We install and replace pressure tanks across the Upstate, sized to the pump on your well.

We trench and lay the water line from the wellhead to the house or the barn. Old lines that leak or sit too shallow get replaced the same way.
