Laurens is the county seat, built around a courthouse square that covers four acres. Laurens CPW has run utilities in and around the city since the 1920s. Its water and wastewater service covers the city of Laurens and the surrounding area. The Laurens County Water and Sewer Commission runs county lines and manages Lake Rabon.
Between the two systems, plenty of Laurens County ground still has no line to it. The county holds about 67,000 people across more than 700 square miles. Gray Court sits on SC-14 near I-385, with Owings about a mile north. Head out past Hickory Tavern or Mountville and the meters thin out fast.
The same holds on the southwest side of the county. Cross Hill sits where SC-39 meets SC-560, with Lake Greenwood just to the west. Waterloo sits south of Laurens on US-221. Ware Shoals straddles the Laurens, Greenwood and Abbeville county lines, and we have posted work from there.
Laurens County sits in the Piedmont, the same ground as the rest of the Upstate. Under the red clay is saprolite, which is bedrock that has weathered into soil. Below that sits solid crystalline rock with cracks running through it. USGS puts it plainly: water movement in that rock is restricted entirely to flow through fractures.
That is why depth changes from one lot to the next. A state groundwater report logged a Laurens County observation well at Indian Creek Station. It was drilled to 194 feet, with casing set down to 16 feet. Across the Upstate counties we work, that same report lists wells from 80 feet to 700 feet.
Nobody can see where the fractures sit under your land before the rig starts. The state well standards require the casing to be set into the bedrock. Since that depth is unknown, our written estimate quotes a minimum depth. We explain there how casing cost can move with the rock.
Laurens County had a hard late summer in 2026. The U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of September 8, 2026 had the whole county abnormally dry. About 94 percent of the county sat in moderate drought or worse. Piedmont wells feel that, because the water they pull comes from a shallow local system.
SCDES lists what a homeowner can do when a residential well goes dry. The pump can drop deeper if enough water sits below it. The existing well can sometimes be deepened instead. If neither works, a driller puts in a new, deeper well on the property.
We have done that job near Lake Greenwood, for a family whose well had run dry. The lake touches Laurens, Greenwood and Newberry counties, and Cross Hill sits just above it. Sometimes the trouble is the pump rather than the well, and that is a well pump repair call. We start at the breaker and the pressure switch before anyone talks about a rig.
Most of Laurens County is rural land, and a lot of it still gets worked. A farm well and a house well are sized differently, because pasture and ponds pull far more water. We size wells for irrigation and livestock to the gallons per minute the use calls for. A household of seven needs more gallons per minute than a household of two.
New houses go up on county land too, and many sit off the utility lines. The well and the pump system go in before the family moves in. We carry the paperwork on a new well. South Carolina's well rules put the driller on the hook for permit coverage before drilling starts. We file the Notice of Intent with SCDES, and the well record goes in at the end. Laurens County Building Codes handles the building permit, and the septic permit comes from the state.
