Well pump repair starts with what the house is doing. No water at any faucet. Pressure that fades while the shower runs. A pump that runs and never shuts off, or a breaker that keeps tripping. Those are different faults with different fixes. We work the system in order and find the one that is real.

Power comes first. A tripped breaker, a blown fuse or a switch someone turned off will stop a good pump cold. Next is the pressure switch, the small box on the pipe near the tank. It tells the pump when to run. Then the tank, then the control box and wiring, and only then the pump.
That order matters because the small faults are also the common ones. A pressure switch sits at the surface and takes minutes to test. A submersible pump hangs far down the well and has to be pulled to be seen. Checking the surface first means a good pump stays in the well.

A pump that runs and never builds pressure points at a few things. The well may not be keeping up with the draw. The pump may be worn. There may be a leak on the water line running from the wellhead to the house. We check the water level in the well before we blame the pump.
Short cycling is the other common complaint. The pump snaps on and off every few seconds instead of running a steady minute or two. Usually the pressure tank has lost its air cushion and filled with water, which is called waterlogging. A failed pressure switch does the same thing.
Most of the wear on a well pump happens when it stops and starts. So short cycling is worth catching early. A tank that has lost its charge can wear out the pump, the switch and the tank. Common switch settings are 30 psi on and 50 psi off, or 40 and 60.
A submersible pump has to come out of the well to be worked on. That means opening the wellhead and pulling the drop pipe, the wire and the pump to the surface. Upstate wells are deep, so that is real work. Two monitoring wells logged in Spartanburg County run 225 and 442 feet deep.
Once the pump is at the surface the picture is usually clear. A pressure switch, a control box or a bad connection is a repair. A motor that has failed after years in the well is a replacement. Setting a new pump while the well is open saves a second pull later. South Carolina well standards call for disinfection after pump repair or pump installation.
Now and then the pump is fine and the well is the problem. Upstate wells draw from cracks in bedrock, and a dry summer pulls the level down. Three monitoring wells in Spartanburg, Chester and Greenville counties hit record lows in the same week of September 2000. When that happens, lowering the pump may be enough. If there is no water below it, the well can be deepened or replaced by drilling a new well.
